Generators

Generators draw shapes for you, worked out from the land: where rivers would run, where people would settle, which way the rain comes. Each sits under the tool for what it makes, and what it adds is one step to undo.

Everything a generator makes is ordinary shapes, so you can move, change or delete any of it afterwards. Don't like the result? ⌘/Ctrl+Z, change a setting, and try again.

Under Coastline

  • Generate land (or Add land once there is some): a new island or continent in the widest stretch of open sea. Set its size, how many bays cut into it, how rugged its coast is, and whether it has mountains.
  • Generate a whole world: land, rivers, towns and kingdoms, roads, borders, forests and names, all at once. The quickest way to something to explore.

Under Zone

  • Draft biomes: forests, grassland, deserts, snow and swamps on the land not yet covered, from its climate: how warm it is, the rain coming off the sea, and dry land in the lee of mountains. Choose the climate (temperate, desert, arctic, tropical or dark), the warmest side, and where the wind blows from.
  • Fill: one kind of zone on one kind of ground: flat lowland, hills and slopes, high ground, along rivers or along the coast. With a coastline or zone selected, it fills inside the selection only.

Under City

  • Place towns: towns where people would settle (river mouths and harbours, fords, crossroads and passes), with a capital for each kingdom. Set how many towns and how many kingdoms.
  • Scatter: ruins, villages, fortresses, landmarks or peaks, across the land, inside a selected outline, or along a selected line.

Under Road

  • Connect all cities: roads joining every city and fortress along the easiest ground, sharing a road where they can.

Under Border

  • Borders from capitals: divides the land between the capitals, one kingdom each.

Under Label

  • Place names: names for the kingdoms (or lands), ranges, rivers and seas, as lettering on the map. Ranges and rivers without a name of their own get one.
Running them one by one? Generate a whole world goes land, rivers, towns, roads, borders, forests, then names, and that order works well by hand too: towns settle by rivers, and roads and borders follow the towns. For more on towns and kingdoms, see Towns, roads and kingdoms.
