Import and export

A world can be downloaded as a single file and opened again later, in this browser or any other.

Export

Click the download button in the editor's top bar and choose World file (JSON). The world is saved as a .json file named after it. The file holds everything the 3D map needs, and the drawing itself, so the editor can open it again just as it was.

Export is the way to keep a copy of your own: as a backup, to move a world between browsers or devices, or to take it into your account.

The 2D map

The same menu saves the world as a drawn map, inked on parchment: forests, mountains and towns as little drawings, the names, a compass rose, a scale bar and a title. Choose Image (PNG) to share it, Vector (SVG) to work on it further, or PDF for printing (A3), which stays sharp at any size. The 2D map is drawn from the world as it is, so it's always up to date.

Import

In the list of worlds, click Import file… and pick a world file. It opens as a new world: in your account if you're signed in, otherwise in this browser.

  • A file exported from the editor comes back with everything you drew.
  • Other world files are converted as far as the editor can. What didn't come across is listed in the World tab under Imported: what didn't come across, until you dismiss it.
  • The map image you traced over isn't in the file, so add it again if you still need it.

Between worlds

To bring part of one world into another, select the shapes, copy them with ⌘/Ctrl+C, open the other world and paste with ⌘/Ctrl+V.

Starting from an example

The list of worlds can open the examples: the Jade Isles, Frostmark, the Saffron Wastes, the Ashlands and Europe. Each opens as a fresh copy that's yours to change. You can also try them in 3D on the home page. The pages for teachers, game masters and writers each have a world of their own, which opens from there.
